I was in the same dilemma as you are but only a month ago. I have two young boys and needed a larger car to carry them and all their gear. As a current Mercedes Benz owner, I was partial to the E320 until I found a 1996 9000CS with low miles. There were several reasons why I went with the Saab. As you know, both cars exterior dimensions are about the same but the interior dimensions are quite different. The E320 has a passenger volume of 95 cubic feet while the Saab is at 99.5 cubic feet. That translates to an additional two inches in leg room, two inches in shoulder and hip room, and one inch of head room over the Mercedes rear seat. Additional space you and your children will appreciate. Also, the Mercedes requires premium unleaded vs. the Saab with regular unleaded. Here in Northern California, there is over a 20 cent/gallon difference between the grades of gas. Gas mileage is 1-2 mpg better with the Saab. Replacement parts for a Mercedes is not cheap. I had a window regulator go out on my Mercedes and the part alone was $700.00! Because of these two things, gasoline and parts costs, the Saab will be less expensive to operate.

Like the other poster, trunk space in the Saab overwhelms the Mercedes, 23.5 cu. ft. vs. 15 cu. ft. respectively and the Mercedes seats don't fold down like the Saab for additional carrying space. Comparing steering mechanisms, the Saab with it's rack and pinion wins over the recirculating ball of the Mercedes. The Saab in my opinion is faster reacting and has better road feel with less body roll. Performance wise, I believe the CSE is quicker off the line with a higher top end speed than the E320. Sound levels in both cars are about the same while on the freeway, approximately 68 dB. The Mercedes symbol carries more prestige than the Saab but with the prestige came more worry if someone wanted to ruin my car. I am a little more careful parking my Mercedes vs. my Saab. Overall, my wife and I have been quite happy with our Saab purchase. We have been impressed with the drivability and functionality that it provides. I thought I was a diehard Mercedes man until I drove the Saab.
