OT: Interesting neighborhood in DC to write paper on?

For my Urban Geography course I am to write "the best paper I have ever written" in the words of my professor. Its %50 of my grade, also.
My assignment is to find a neighborhood in an urban setting and describe what it is like and why it is there. I will need to describe what makes the neighborhood distinctive and its own entity, beyond the geographic description of its borders, etc.
My professor used the example of the Castro district in San Francisco. One would investigate the attitudes of the locals, find out about their values, what they have in common. Also, I need to investigate other areas such as how the people there express their distinctiveness (ie rainbow bumper stickers and flags, etc in Castro district).
I am going to school in Fredericksburg, VA, so basically I am 50 miles from Washington DC and 60 miles from Richmond. Does anyone here have in mind any neighborhood in either of those cities that would be interesting to study and also has a good level of distinctiveness in some respect. I figure if I do a really good job on this paper, the residents of whatever neighborhood I do will enjoy reading my paper, finding out more about their neighborhood, etc since my prof is putting out papers on the Internet.
Thanks for any ideas you can offer,
Rob
