Bristol built them for many years and were used in many good WWII aircraft like the Bristol Beaufighter. The cylinder has ports in the side much like a 2 cycle engine but it is a four cycle
and there is another sleeve on the outside of this sleeve that have holes in them . In operation this out side sleeve is turned from side to side by a cam thus opening and closing the holes. Because of the Lack of a hot exhaust valve they were able to run higher compression ratios and were about 10% better on fuel per Horse power than standard poppet valve engines. They have a cut away model with a hand crank on it at the Winnepeg Air Museum. Too bad they went by the wayside.
