it's portrayal of men under fire. Much like the invasion scene in Saving Private Ryan, I think it's an eye-opening representation of the chaos, brutality and gore of a serious firefight.
I wish I had seen the movie first, before reading the book. But I didn't, and I have a few gripes.
1) Lack of character development -- this was the key to the book, and sorely lacking in the movie. To understand the heroism, cowardice and make me care about the men in this situation, I need to know more about them.
2) Failure to convey the overwhelming odds the soldiers faced. As another poster remarked, the little birds' strafing runs were the only reason the US forces positions were not overun during the night. US positions were completely surrounded, and outnumbered at least 10-to-1.
3) The passage of time -- this goes to the overwhelming odds, but the movie didn't give me a sense of just how long the troops were out there, exposed in hostile territory. Without making this a 16 hour movie, there are some other ways to represent the passage of time without simply flashing the time on the screen. Omitting the nightime water and ammo re-supply was a mistake.
4) HUGE GRIPE: The movie alludes to the UN Commander delaying the convoy because he was not informed of the mission before it took place. I'm a big fan of conspiracy theories, and I think the movie did this because the US/UN do not want people to know that the supposedly neutral UN command faction was fully apprised of US Special Forces operations in Mog.
The length of time it took to assemble the convoy is a critical piece of the story, and intimating that it was the result of military brass sniping is a disservice to all involved.
