The reason you don't see a lot of late '80s/early '90s VWs is because VW was in the pits as far as sales were concerned in the '80s, and had only started to recover in the early '90s. Through a combination of poor quality and reliability, lousy advertising (remember "Fahrverguegnen" or however it was spelled), and not offering models with the features Americans wanted, VW sold less than 70,000 models per year in the U.S in some years of the '80s, and at one time seriously considered pulling out of the U.S. market altogether. This makes their revival in the last 5 or so years all the more remarkable. Even if you don't like the cars, you have to admire the turnaround that VW has accomplished in the U.S.
For those of you with more than a passing interest in VW, I highly recommend the book, "Getting the Bugs Out," which is the story of the fall of VW in the U.S. after the Beatle years, and its rise to prominence in the U.S. car market in the last 5 years. Book is available new or used from Amazon.com, or should be in any full-line bookstore like B. Dalton or Borders.
