Well I'll try. The odd-ball turn is mainly required in the central business district to stop obstructing the trams (trolleys to you). Normally, you do a right turn from the center of the road (mirror image of what we do in North America). At designated intersections in Melbourne, you do a right turn by moving into the left lane, pulling across the intersection and beginning to turn right. Such intersections will have a sign hanging above the street 100+ meters ahead of the intersection, The sign is white background nad shows an arrow looking rather like a question mark reversed. That means go right by getting into left lane. When you pull to into the intersection, do not attempt to complete the turn until you are aboslutely sure there is no traffic coming from behind you or from the opposite direction (cars can be pbscured by the "platforms" for tram passengers). Basically, I would wait for the lights to change so that it is green in the street you are entering.
Hope that helps (it's a long explanation). If you are downtown, watch the cars in front of you - they should show you the way. Melbourne downtown is a square grid so it is not too hard to navigate (unlike Sydney which is largely based on the cow & horse paths of 200+ years ago). One suggestion is to park on the edge of the downtown area and catch the trams to get into the City Centre
