Jaguar has long used "R" for performance. I'm sure they did not steal it from the rice fad.

About 1990ish, they had an XJS-R which was a fancier XJS. Then
when the XJ series was redesigned, they created the XJR which was the
supercharged version of the XJ6, then XJ8. Then when the came out with
the XK8 Sports car, the XKR was the supercharged sportier version.
Now for an R version of the S-type, it's to be expected and Jaguar's followers will know exactly what Jaguar is talking about. Their R-versions are real beastly luxury cars.
