The stories you'll hear about Saab reliability cannot be easily compared with those of other cars, because Saab owners tend to hold onto their cars well past 100K miles. However, that's when rubber parts start to wear out and the car requires more attention. Rubber seals in brake calipers, slave cylinder, steering rack, rubber suspension bushings, and electrical parts which wear out, such as those door lock actuators. So in some circles, Saabs have gotten a bad rap for reliability, which I think is undeserved and fails to observe that we're comparing apples and oranges here. Any high-mileage car needs attention to the wear items.
My wife and I have had four Saabs. Our'87 900S left me stranded the day after I decided to lubricate a properly functioning ignition switch, and it jammed. The '88 9000 turbo (9kt) had to be towed after the slave cylinder died at about 120K miles. The other two ('91 9kt and '95 9kCSE) have never left me stranded. My wife first suggested Saab. We got the '87 and have never looked back.
