As a former figure skater, I was sure that the Canadians had won it at the end of their program, and I was upset and surprised when the Russians got the gold. However, I have reviewed both programs, and the Russian's program was more difficult--much deeper edging, more intricate foot work, tougher lifts. Their only fault was the guy stepping out of the landing of his double axel--he landed the jump still, though. The mention of other errors by them is incorrect. Also, the Canadian's program, while skated brilliantly, was an older program, and the judges want to see fresh programs--especially at the Olympics.
If I were a judge, I would have given it to the Canadians, but it still would have been completely feasible for the Russians to win. The problem is that the ISU should have shut down this controversy at the start and stated why the Russians performance was better--it could be reasonably argued, as I mentioned above--now, by awarding a second set of golds and caving to popular (Western) opinion, they have truly undermined the integrity of the sport. I hope that at least a new system of judging comes from this whole mess.
