Yeah, I saw that same program "Roll Over: The hidden secrets of the SUV" on PBS... This should be MANDATORY viewing for everyone thinking of buying one of these beasts. I didn't like SUVs before and now I absolutely HATE them!

As for a low budget Saab... The problem is that Saab is a low volume manufacturer. They can't sell a whole lot of cheap cars like Hyundai because they just don't have the economies of scale (and the cost of producing cars in Sweden is not cheap).

In the 80's Saab made a conscious choice to move "upscale" and I think it was the only choice they had... Just about every car, heck even VW, has a lot more features than even 10 years ago. (Did you know that VW the original "everyman's car" is coming out with a high-end model to challenge Mercedes! Whodathunk!)

I agree with others that it's kind of pointless to pay for leather or automatic climate, just to get the high end turbo. But Saab is kinda of forced to do this in order to limit the number of combinations on dealer lots. Think of all the different ways you can option out a car... The German's nickle-and-dime you for every option and it makes direct price comparisons harder because you can't find the same car on two different dealer lots! Saabs actually have a lot of standard options for the money.

Besides, we all know that the best way to buy a Saab is to find a good slightly used one... That good ole Saab depreciation hit can work to your advantage IF you let someone else take the worst of it!
