What's the mileage on the car? I find it difficult to believe that anybody would have had the car serviced and not got SOME kind of record of the work. Can he talk to the moonlighting mechanic? He should definitely get a pre-purchase inspection done by a knowledgeable Porsche mechanic. Where in the country is he/the car? I know many good Porsche shops in MA, but the PCA will have a list of recommended shops throughout the country. Also try posting a message on Rennlist.com
The link below is to the Northeast Region PCA site, but it will get you into the National site from there.
Whatever he decides to do, don't buy the car without an inspection. If the current owner has not had the car long, he may have skimped on maintenance, and the previous owner may have done the same before he sold it. Porsche maintenance is not cheap, and I've noticed many owners cut corners towards the end of their ownership of a car, figuring they won't get back much of the $2,500 they just spent on a major service... then the next owner does the same, and all of a sudden, the subsequent owner finds that his $25,000 'deal' needs $10,000 to bring it up to snuff! Caveat Emptor!
