My dad, an economist, took a chance and replaced the up-till-then trusty bug with a brand new SAAB 96. Back then, I think a new VW would have been about $2,000 and the 96 cost $2,500 (Second-hand info: I was 3 at the time, and remember these numbers from stories told years later.)
The risk paid off- that 96 was the car I learned to drive with. It was 14 years old, and had 180,000 miles or so, but fired right up every time and never missed a beat. Original motor and tranny- nothing replaced except for oil, sparkplugs, and distributor points. Fun to drive, and built like a tank. I was the only kid at school whose car had a V4 motor, 4-speed transmission, on the steering column, or the capacity to freewheel.
Since then, my parents have had a '78 99L (new), '83 900 4dr, '86 900 4dr, '89 900 3dr, '91 9000(all used) and a '01 9-3 (new).
I have driven (in addition to the parents' 96 and 99) an '80 900 GLi, '83 900T, '86 900T, and my current '86 SPG- all used hatchbacks. They have proven themselves to be safe, reliable, and fun. They are great winter cars, which is very important to me. I'm almost afraid to own anything else. I'm constantly jamming rental car keys between the seats, expecting the ignition to be there. My left foot doesn't know what to do when I drive an automatic. What would I do with all of my spare parts if I buy anything else?
Luckily, with only 210,000 miles, I won't be shopping for another car any time soon.
