With regard to the taxes, you could get out of GST, but pretty sure you can't get out of provincial tax. Odds are that provincial tax exceeds the local sales tax of where you live in the US, unless it's CA, Seattle, or NYC (or certain other tax-happy cities). For licensing, you get a temp tag from the dealership... Just like the US. Insurance - that's a good one. Many insurance companies don't like insuring cars when they CROSS the border, let alone when they're BOUGHT on the other side. Haven't checked my Saab, but my wife's Jetta is marked as being valid from an emissions perspective in all 50 states, including CA, as well as all Canadian provinces (car companies have long sought to make US bound and Canadian bound cars as similar as possible.) I would think you will likely have to pay much more than $700 US in duty.
VIN numbers aren't different between the country of destination - only the country of origin is definitively in the VIN. Granted, based on the last six digits, a mfr could surely tell you what country the car WAS sent to, I don't believe that anyone at the DMV breaks down VINs at that level.
The speedometer AND SID will all be set to metric. If the duty doesn't make it cost more, converting this back will.
I'd have to think this is a losing proposition.
