Between hatchback and wagons these days. What exactly distinguishes a hatchback, from a wagon? Seems to me, it may be little more than the angle of the rear window. On a hatchback, it's generally 45 degrees or lower, wagon 45 degrees or greater, up to 90 degrees.
I think some look good, such as the Focus and new new Mazda thing whatever it's called (Protege?). Some are hideous, such as the Lexus IS300, while on some I am as yet undecided, such as the Matrix/Vibe. I consider those more a small SUV than either wagon or hatchback, though.
The thing is, they ALL have less interior and cargo space than a Saab 9000, almost all less power and hugely less torque, while at the same time only picking up a few MPG, if that. Doesn't seem very useful to me, but I'm certainly willing to admit that not everyone needs the kind of cargo space that I need on occassion.
A true hatchback is the 5 door Hyundai Elantra, which I think looks quite good. Still small, but at least it doesn't look weird (but then, I don't think Saabs look weird, either...we all know how that goes..).
