I'm spending a few hours each weekend as a volunteer with this program for autistic / downs syndrome / mentally retarded kids. I haven't ever really spent time around kids, and these kids are even a little tougher to communicate with as you can imagine. Most of the kids there are about 6-11 years old I would guess. I didn't get any training or anything, its a pretty small program affiliated with my college, but there are plenty of people around to help when things get out of hand.
My problem is that I talk like an adult, because Im an adult. I sit down with a kid and I feel like talking about politics or current events and the kids just stare blankly at me. I'm getting better at talking to them, but I am not as good as Id like to be at dumbing down the conversation. Is there anything in particular that kids like to talk about? I wish I could remember what I was interested in when I was a kid. They seem to like to talk about toys a lot, it helps to have some kind of prop that the both of you can focus on, abstract ideas are probably out of the question. Any advice? Thanks,
Rob
