2 new tyres: front or rear?

After finding two of my tyres vandalized, I am replacing them with new ones of a different make, but keeping the two part-worn ones (which are not identical).
Although the old tyres are currently on the same side, they should clearly go on the same axle, with the new ones at the other end.
The question is, should I put the new ones on the front, or on the back?
One of the tyre guys says all front-wheel drive cars should have new ones on the front, I think the reason was for better stability.
Another tyre guy says new ones on the back - that's where the better grip should be - you don't want the rear end continuing when the front has stopped...
Another expert told me long ago that the new ones should be on the back then moved to the front when the front ones need replacing - left on the back the wear would outlive the shelf life.
General advice is to rotate front/read annually, then replace all four together, but that's not suitable in this case.
Which are you - front-endian or rear-endian? And why?
(Car is a 900i, but I think this would apply to any Saab, hence the General BB)
