Last summer, my brother & I recently renovated my large deck that happens to receive the maximun of amount of sun exposure (house was designed to face "solar South"). First off, we pressure washed the entire surface to remove the "grey" coat (yes, it was pretty neglected!), then went over it with a deck detergent from Home Depot (the orange stuff), then rinsed & let dry completly. My bro told me the "pros" use a mixture of dish detergent & chlorox, since the key is to rid the surface of any organic growth.
I am glad I went with the solid stain instead of the clear grain type, though I like the wood grain look. The solid stain will give you more wear/durability in the long run. Apply 2 coats & enjoy! I was able to borrow the pressure washer from a relative and it was worth it! I ended staining my house that summer using the same technique & it came out terrific! Thorough preparation I believe, is the key! Good Luck!
