About 20 months ago we were in the VW dealer looking at Passats. Both my wife and I found the seats in the Passat to be totally unacceptable. The cloth seats were merely uncomfortable, the leather seats made benches at the bus station look downright cushy.
As an example, Mercedes seats have always been hard, but they were comfortable hard. The Passat seats were too hard, period. I also found the seat bottom to be too short, so a large part of my thigh goes unsupported. This cuts off blood supply to the lower leg.
We ended up with a Jetta, and a big reason was that the Jetta seats were merely so-so, compared to the downright painful Passat seats. The seat cushions in the Jetta were longer than in the Passat. I will admit that over the 20 months we've had the Jetta, we've come to get used to the seats. Notice 'get used to.' They went from squirming uncomfortable to 'they don't hurt.' 'Much.' Compared to the seats in my various Saabs, well, there is no comparison. Even compared to previous VW's. The seats in my old '83 Sirrocco were great. Not Saab-great, but great.
When the time comes to part out my '88 9000T, I'm taking the front seats for myself, and putting on bases and setting them in my family room. And yes, I'm going to connect up the seat heaters.
