It's fine as an only car.

The roof will not last as long if it gets snow & ice on it, but not a big enough difference to notice. Saab specified a 5 year roof (I'm told), but most people keep them on 10 years. So maybe if your friend keeps it outdoors she'll only get 7 or 8 years use of the top. That's still plenty. I am going to replace my roof this year, it's 10 years old.

My understanding is the convertible is actually heavier than a hardtop 2 door 900 (which is what the convertible is made from). The stronger sills, the metal framing for the roof, the beefed up windscreen frame, etc add up quickly weight wise.

As far as winter traction, get thee a set of snow tires! My '92 900 convertible does just fine in the snow aside from the low clearance from the front airdam (snowplow!).

The only things bad about the convertible are the blind spot from the big piece of canvas at the back corners of the roof (wide angle mirrors really help with this), & the fact that it only takes a pocket knife to break into the car. I make a point to keep the interior empty to avoid temptation & so far this NYer has had no problems. She has 2 more years on the airbags before Saabs recommended service (10 years). That will probably be expensive.

If she gets the car, give her a bottle of sun screen to keep in it as a gift. I keep a bottle in each of my convertibles as you never know when the urge to drop the top will hit you! I tell you top down driving simply cleanses the soul - such a pleasure!
