I would write Sunoco head office a letter, cc to the dealer. Send it
by double registered mail and address it to head office legal.
There are ways retailers compensate customers for such damages
and, although based on law, the are run and funded on corporate policy
and the costs of settling your kind of claim part of the cost and risk
of doing business. Normally, such risks are self-insured by the bigs.
In law, this incident was reasonably foreseeable as a result
of the less than satisfactory way they changed the pavement.
In law, you are an "invitee" to the service station property, hence
you are in a special position viz the landowner, who owes you a
duty to take reasonable measures to protect you and your property.
What you describe is a trap for the unwary and bound to cause damages.
I'd run a letter "without prejudice" (meaning it cannot be used in
evidence at trial) and make a demand for fair compensation based on
your real outlays.
