A firewall is used to keep the bad guys from cracking into your computer. FWIW, you are just as vulnerable when using dialup over a phone line. The main difference is with a cable modem you are probably going to be connected to the Internet, and therefore exposed to crackers, indefinitely rather than a few minutes at a time. There are different programs based on what operating system you are using.

Dave's point about setting up a router is a good one - you can share the one cable connection between multiple computers using what's called IP masquerading & forwarding. Again, how you accomplish this depends on which OS you have.

Depending on your cable company & computer, you may or may not have to buy more equipment. Lots of places will give you a cheapo network card when you sign up with them, or your computer might have come with one pre-installed.

You can use this link to see if any security holes exist on your computer - with a good firewall, there should be none!
