I agree with the notchy shifting. My 87 9kt was smoooooth (300k+ miles). My Aero is a bit stiff comparably speaking. The other ones I drove, coincidentally enough, were all 5 speeds and had a similar feel with the 94 model being the smoothest but not by much. I also test drove a 9-5 when they first came out in '99 and thought the trannies in those felt, ummmm, more modern(?) for lack of a better description.
The only thing I can think, and this is so very true when I think of all the Saab's I've owned, is that everything in a Saab gets better with age and miles. I've learned to get used to the somewhat notchy shifting on my Aero and when I drive other Saab's they almost seem sloppy in comparison. Dunno.
