When volvo stopped designing boxy vehicles, they had a lot of negative feedback from the volvo faithful, and I imagine it was a very hard thing to do, walking away from that heritage and towards a new look.
I do admit that, as a first time Saab owner in 2002, I do get my dander up reading some of the more emotionally pitched (and often factually incorrect) criticisms of the new vehicles, or posts that fail to admit that Saab's stated corporate mission is to grow 2x, and they can't do it by sticking to their limited product line and abandoning the highest volume and growth segments to the competition.
Take Edmonds.com, when you look up Audi A4, and hit the "comparison maker" button, it pulls up 6 other vehicles, BMW, MB, Volvo, Lexus, Acura and even an I35 (!!). No Saab 9-3. That has to burn Saab up, and that has to change.
Sometimes the things that make you successful can hold you back from reaching new heights, too. I am all for change, particularly when it involves such a superior product like a Saab, it brought me to the brand for the first time. My view may not be as steeped in history and perspective as the longtimers here, but my dollars sure count on the monthly sales quotas when I bought a 2002.
