A tuned exhaust for the 96; Engrs ???

I blew the muffler on my "Tin Lizzie" this week, and
since I had long been thinking of making a simpler
exhaust system for it, I remembered reading a book by
Colin Chapman, (i think it was), the English Engr
behind Lotus, and the fast companies of the '60's.
In it he said that exhaust gases travel out the tail-
pipe at about 980 ft/sec. then reflect back 2 or 3
times when they reach the end. My thinking is this:
at 4200 RPM, say, that is 70 revs/sec. The distance
the gase will travel between revs is: 980/70 = 14 ft.
Since we want the negative reflection to reach the
exhaust valve just as it is opening to suck the new gas
out, we cut the 14 ft in half so it will have traveled
14 ft when it reaches the valve. Can anyone bring my
thinking up to date or should i just go on the wagon
again? Thank you. "The Kid"
