Oddly enough, tight circular motion works, done with fingertip. Rinse, dry linearly from center. NOT TOO HARD.
I have a cd restorer, toothpaste works better.
Go figure.
Yes, better cd players will sometimes pick up data off of otherwise unreadable surfaces.
