The 9-3 and LS are derived from the same basic platform. In fact, the brake rotors on the Saturn LS have "SAAB" stamped on them. So the LS uses the same brake system. The manual transmission in the Saturn LS says "SAAB" on it. It is the same 5 speed manual trans as in the naturally aspirated 9-3 and 9-5's (and the 9000s). So for around $16K you can get a Saturn LS with a $25K+ car's manual transmission.
The 2.2L engine in the Saturn is really a SAAB/Opel derivation. It has direct ignition, balance shafts, and other Saab features. It is actually a really smooth, powerful engine... much better than those found on regular American cars.
Unfortunately, the build quality of the Saturn was deplorable! The thing shook on the highway, and Saturn couldn't fix it. But on the third try, the Saturn dealer called and said "we can't fix it... we'll buy the car back from you". I was floored. Saturn customer service is absolutely superb!!!
