On the contrary, we should stay on that soapbox. We can't avoid the benefits of more efficiencies and higher performance of computer controlled systems. But we should not be hostage to "you have no option but to pay me, the dealer" if the repair information for those computer systems are not released to the general industry, at least after a period of time.
Project yourself 10 years into the future; would you buy a used eight year old 2004 9-5 Aero with 65,000 miles on it that is sold because the owner can't afford the dealer service costs to fix a problem with the car? And you can't tell what it takes to fix the car without incurring unknown costs? What would happen to such cars - they decrease in value dramatically. The owner would be forced to trade in on a new model, the dealer fixes the car cheap and the used acr buyer can only buy from the dealer. The dealer has control of everyone.
The only option would be to hack the codes and watch saabnet become the underground society fighting the Matrix like car industry - Scott Paterson as Neo, anyone?
