I have had BMW bikes for the last 20 years. Fairly common to have a bit of spooge (BMW rider term, technical name is swarf) on the magnet when doing a change. It is not an issue unless there are chunks in the spooge.
The oil plug on the 9-5 sux. It did not seal and always dripped. The dealer tightened it so tight that I stripped the hex off removing it. I had installed a magnet on the tip. I now have a aftermarket plug that seals much better. I have installed a magnet on this plug too. Works great.
FWIW, the best drain plugs are made by Chicago Rawhide as OEM for Dodge. Magnet in end and a really slick sealing method. Works perfectly. Unfortunatley, they are not avaliable in other sized and ate too small to be remachined. Dodge also has magnets on the trany drain plug. In the rear end they have a magnet on the bottom. Well thought out.
