Have a 97 900SET with the stock Saab Audio System 3. I was trying to decide between the Boston Acoustics FX3 3.5" and the Infinity 32.5CF front dash speakers. After trying both out for a week I decided on the Infinitys. Both speakers were very easy to install. They pretty much just dropped in the without any modifications.
Both the Bostons and Infinitys were definitely better than the stock speakers. The highs (cymbals, high hats) in both speakers were improved and the midrange had a little more punch. I went with the Infinitys because human voices sounded a little more natural and the sound in general seemed to be a little more open than the Bostons. The Infinitys also seemed a little more dynamic. Human voices on the Bostons sounded a little nasally and "honky." I am using the stock headunit to drive the speakers and it is plenty loud for me. One more note, the Infinitys are like a component speaker set, b/c there is an outboard crossover and both the tweeter and midrange speaker are wired seperately. Perhaps this why they sound slightly better than the FX3s.
I have also ordered Kicker RMB6 6" midbass drivers to replace the existing stock 6" midbass drivers. I'm not looking to make a "boom" system, just want to improve and tighten the bass with the existing 50X2 stock amp. The RMB6s are specifically designed for a frequency range of 30-500hz, perfect for the stock amp crossed over at 200HZ and the mounting depth is only 2.5 inches (I believe the max mounting depth in the door is 3.06". I also looked at the JL Audio 6w0 but their mounting depth is 3.5" and the MB Quart PWD 160, but they are more of a midrange speaker than midbass.
I will update when I get those in!!
Costs:
Infinity 32.5CF $55.00!! (The usual street price is $99.00 and $119 from Crutchfield)
Boston FX3s $69.00
Kicker RMB6 (purchased brand new pair on ebay for $102.00 (retail: $218.00/ pair)
