German car magazines love German cars becuase in general, German cars are the best. The last Saab 9-3 (which I own) cannot compete with the BMW's or Audis unless you factor in the deeply discounted price here in the USA and the Hatch Back, which they do not have. (but they do have stylish small wagons)
The 9-3 (current) rattles like a bucket of bolts, has awful steering, and in general is no where near as nice as the current A-4 or BMW 3. The Saab is faster in certain situations, like when you step on it from 30 or 40mph and going in a straight line.
You also have to factor that in Germany, you can buy a BMW 3 series or A4 in Sedan or Wagon form with a 1.9 or 2 liter Turbo Diesel with cloth seats and stripped of the silly features that we are forced to buy in the USA. For sure, a BMW 320D T (wagon) has more torque, more room and handles better than a Saab at a decent price. The Audi can be had with a 1.9tdi and Quattro in a wagon with cloth seats and a sweet navagation system. IF you want big alloy wheels, you buy them, if you want 16" steel wheels, you buy that.
So, in the end, Saab has much more competition in Germany than in the USA and price is not a god excuse for a German to buy a Saab as they can also buy a BMW or Audi with a high torque Turbo Diesel for less than a Saab with a gas hog 2.0 turbo driving the 2 front wheels.
I hope that this new Saab is nice and I am sure that Germans and German car magazines do also. everybody loves a great new car and another choice of product to buy.
