I went through that recently with my Viggen coming off lease. I told them my intention was to buy the car, but they sent someone anyways. They'd called numerous times about it to schedule it, and had to reschedule it - the scheduling of it took more time than the inspection. This was my first ever leased car, and the amount of phone calls and paperwork involved with the end of the lease was more than I was prepared for. I'll probably just stick to used cars in the future, but the Viggen was not available used in the summer of '99 :-)
Some guy shows up with a notepad and digital camera and fills out a paper worksheet with checkmarks and comments. He didn't know much about saabs because he asked what Viggen was and how to pronounce it. He measured tire tread depth, photographed a couple minor scuffs such as on the bumper, and photographed the stickers on the doorframe, the car mileage and a couple general pictures of the car. He also ran the car through the gears while parked just to make sure the shifter moved to the places it was supposed to. We both signed the worksheet and he gave me a copy of it. In conversation, he mentioned he goes all over the state to do this, and doesn't work for Saab.
Seems like a waste of time and money to me if someone has indicated they want to buy it. The only reason I can think of requiring the inspection is if people lease cars and change their mind about buying it after the lease ends. Getting an answer in writing from the leaseholder whether they want to buy or return the car seems like it would be a more troublefree way to resolve that question.
