IFF can have 5 operating modes. All operate on the same frequency, 1030 & 1090 Mhz.(in & out) Mode 1,2,& 4 are military only codes, 1 & 2 are F.O.U.O (for official use only) 4 being the secret stuff that can get you shot down, even exactly how it works is classified. Mode 3A & 3C are the same military and civilian. 3A is a 4 digit code from 0000 to 7777 asigned by traffic controlers. 3C is 4 digit altitude from automatic equiptment on the aircraft. The only difference between the modes is the spacing between pulses, Its basically a digital signal.
22 years as a military avionics tech.
My favorite way to sign off dead bugs on windscreen: Contacted Corpsman for confirmation of deceased state, notified next of kin, performed appropriate last rites.
