I own a sign company and we do this all the time. You can actually use a razor blade to remove the vinyl from glass; it won't hurt the glass and will take most of the adhesive off. Any remaining adhesive can be removed with any of the citrus-based solvents. There are several of these that are sold by sign supply wholesalers but you probably won't be able to find any. You might try a local sign shop and see if they'll sell you a small amount.
You can use heated air to remove the vinyl from the painted surfaces. A hair dryer generally will not get hot enough to do the job right. A hot-air gun works best (like the type used for stripping paint). You just want to get the vinyl hot enough for the adhesive to release so you can peel it off. I've done this for years and never had a problem with damaging the paint. Heat up an area of the sticker until the vinyl softens, then get the heat away from the vinyl and peel it off. If it's a large sticker you'll have to do it in sections. If things go well, most of the adhesive will stay with the vinyl. Any remaining vinyl can be removed with the same solvent.
