I had a '76 99. Loved it, except for the lack of power steering. Ran it headlong into a delivery truck on the highway (long story) with about 50mph between us. As the car went through a 180degree spin on the way to impact I was suspended in air and held by the 3-point belt system. I never touched the door or window or steering wheel. My glasses were thrown from my face. After the impact, the trucks bumper was broken and the 99's bumper, radiator, and one fender clobbered. Drove it off the road and had it repaired. Drove it for four more years after. The 99 was a real tank. Yes, safe.
The experience convinced me that the seat/shoulder belt and rigid passenger cage are the real safety elements-airbags seem secondary.
