From reading your thread it's impossible to say.
Was the motherboard replacement the same as the original? If not then you may have some sort of memory compatibility issue. The wrong memory on the wrong motherboard can result in terrible stability problems. Was XP installed ON the new motherboard? Sounds like it was. Get the ZDNet benchmark programs and run those and see if they run successfully - if not the test that they crash on may identify the source of your problem (video, sound, memory, etc).
What video card/sound card do you have? Do you have the latest drivers for those? You'll need to go to the manufacturers' websites for those.
Have you gotten the latest patches for the game? Also a good idea. Do a search in Google Groups related to your problem - you may find other people having issues with XP and Baldur's Gate.
FWIW, I think Macs are nice computers for digital media, etc, but you pay a lot more for less performance than you can get from a PC generic. I do play a lot of games, and the support for Macs is lacking, and the major titles usually lag behind for the Mac.
I built a brand-new PC from high-end components bought off the internet for a total of $1200. This included an OEM license for XP Pro since I also do development work on this machine. When I first built the machine I had stability problems related to cheap-o memory. I replaced it with Corsair (the "cadillac" of PC RAM) and problems went away. This new machine with XP pro is more stable than my old one with Win2K pro, so it's not the O/S to blame as others have suggested.
I play all sorts of games without trouble, and Baldur's Gate is a relatively old game so I suspect that you have a driver or memory issue, or don't have the latest patch for the game itself.
Good luck!
