The '88 SPG has 130,000+ miles. A past '88 of mine had 305,000 miles on it when I sold it. And I stell see it going strong on the road.
The '97 Talladega has 114,000 miles on it now. I've had virtually NO major problems with it so far (knock California Burl Walnut!). Both are great cars. Each has advantages and disadvantages over the other.
The classic is easier to work on, however the NG needs less work.
The NG has scads more power and can easily be chip-tuned in pre-T7 models. T-7 and later cars, though still tunable, has a few unique challenges in this regard, which I won't get into here.
The classic too is quite tunable, but not so much through a chip (still available certainly, but there are other methods as well).
The classic is much more configurable: by this I mean the folding seats actually fold flat. I could get the NG seats to fold flat in theory, but my 6'2" frame would NOT fit behind the wheel if I were to do so. And even if I could, there is a cross member that sticks up in the floor behind the seats negating much of its usefulness.
The NG has a nasty torque steering problem especially when adding power to the car. Easily fixed with Abbott Racing's VRK, but why Saab didn't go back and fix this and/or incorporate Abbott's fix is beyond me. here is the one big complaint I have on the NG. Love my VRK. Saab missed a valuable lesson here. The NG/9-3 could have been much better recieved in the press had they done something about this issue.
love 'em both for different reasons. A classic will always have a sweet spot in my automotive heart though.
Don't know if that helped, but just my $.02 worth...
