If it's a four ohm per coil, thus dropping to two ohms when in parallel, almost all amps, five channel or otherwise, can handle it, unless it's specifically in a bridged configuration. Almost all 4-6 channel amplifiers I have seen are stable into two ohms. If it's not stable, well, unless it's a total piece of crap, it will overheat and shut down, and turn back on when things have cooled off. Then you know it can't handle it. :) On the chance that it really is total garbage, it may not have thermal overload protection, then it could actually be fried, at least on that particular channel. Can't say when the last time was that I saw an amp without thermal protection, though.
I'm also running a DVC subwoofer, mine is 8 ohms per coil, however, which results in a net of 4 ohms, so no sweat. I like DVC because they give you several additional options, even beyond the three different impedance choices. Did I say three? Yep, parallel, series, or you can run each coil independently off it's own stereo channel, and the driver will sum them electrically/mechanically. Another benefit of DVC is that you can change the Q (damping factor - also sometimes called quality factor, the lower the better for accuracy) by putting a resistor over one of the voice coils while driving the other. You can go all the way down to a straight short. I haven't done this myself, but looks very intriguing if one ever wanted to make a demonstration subwoofer to show just how different values of box Q affect the sound. In essence, you could demonstrate changese in box size using a given woofer, without changing the box size. Pretty cool.
