you should always shop around when you know what needs to be replaced, so you know you are getting a good rate. Some independant shops and mechanics are really good, but I would venture to say that most of the worst and least trustworthy are also independent, since they really have no one to answer to and keep them in check. We always submit the estimate before beginning a repair, and we have to get approval for any additional charges. Sometimes, there is miscommunication between the tech, the advisor, and the customer, but thats when the manager straigtens things out.
