Adrian..
The problem here is the way marketing works.. Each car you mention has that 1 or 2 special attribute that seperates it from the pack. Now whether or not it's valid or based on past reputation is another story.. but they still hold up. Consider the following:
BMW is known for its superior weight distribution & handling..along with that smooth engine. Audi has AWD/quatro along with their nicely styled interiors.. The G35 offers great bang for the buck in terms of Horsepower... Lexus offers great reliability, smooth ride, along with great fit and finish.. and the Volvo is the official soccer mom's car due to its reputation for safety...
Then there's SAAB. While SAAB is competitive in terms of most of the above, it doesn't seem to have that one standout attribute to separate it from the others... quirky doesn't cut it, nor does a center mounted ignition, torque steer, etc... ? Turbo ? most folks think of that as a liability rather than advantage (past reputation again in terms of trouble and uneven acceleration, etc.). Great torque curve ? yes, but most folks only look at a horsepower rating for performance. Saftey ? yes..we know we're as good/if not better than the Volvo.. but Saab somehow missed the PR boat on this one. Handling ? as you suggest , it's very good now, but it will always be an also ran without AWD or rear drive....
Just my thoughts.....
