Break Fluid - how often do I need to refill it ?

I just did my 30,000 miles major service back in April and I only drove about 3,000 miles since then. Last week, I took my car to the sho b/c the break waring sign was on. The guy at the SAAB service told me it was because the break fluid was low. I am wondering how often do I need to change the fluid ??
