John,
You are taking the right approach to this dilemma.
Do not try to argue your case, remember a summons is another source of revenue for any jurisdiction. Especially if it is a small town.
Try to settle for a plea bargain where the fines are usually 80% higher BUT your insurance and your sons driving record will not be affected.
What I would do (did):
Show up to court up earlier (well presented) and ask to speak to the prosecutor.
Inform him/her that you are aware of the charges and would like to plead guilty to a similar offense EVEN IF THE FINE IS HIGHER but you do not want to jepordize your sons driving record. (make sure you emphasize that his driving record will not be affected)
Chances are they will accept your offer and when you go in front of the judge all you have to do is plead guilty.
I had speeding tickets adjusted from disobeying a sign to irregular driving.
All these were without points and without any insurance adjustments.
As far as your tactic to pleading guilty to a lesser charge…it a catch 22….your insurance rates won’t be re-adjusted but it’s a higher fine.
My brother is a police officer in NJ and informed me that 80% of the towns in NJ have a summons dedicated to people who want an alternative to a speeding ticket.
Again it is a higher fine but no points no insurance adjustment.
As far as your son….he could pay you back by shoveling the snow off your SAAB this winter.
