I was selling cars then and if your car used regular-leaded gas as well as unleaded, they sold like hotcakes. Nobody wanted to be restricted to unleaded gas. That choice alone was more important to some than the vehicle. You could always use unleaded in your CVCC, as a matter of fact I think that's what Honda recommended, but not having the actual restrictor in the filler neck and hence the ability to use the cheaper regular-leaded gas, was an incredible windfall for Honda and BMW sales at the time.
People were afraid of catalytic converters.
