Hi,
That Valentina is a real fox, isn't she?! What's a season of Sopranos
without some earthy animalistic behavior! :-)
I think that this is another set-up episode. So, it covered a lot of
areas, mostly having to do with women.
Tony's unwillingness to take Valentina as his goomar is pretty
primordial and somewhat subtle. Basically, he doesn't want to raise
demon spawn. I don't think that Tony has slept with a virgin since
high school. So, that was not his hang-up, and he definitely did not
mind hooking up with Valentina in the country-side, but like he says
goomars have status.
So, if Tony takes Valentina as his goomar and she gets pregnant, Tony
did not want to possibly raise demon spawn as his own progeny. That's
why he even stooped to asking Janice about her experience with Ralphie.
Tony's in trouble. He likes this chick that much, and why the heck not?!
When he was pretty sure that there was not any coitus between Ralphie and
Valentina, I'm sure his fingers didn't move quickly enough ... when
dialing the keys on his cell-phone.
The other stuff about women are our experiences with our mothers.
I do *not* believe in pre-destination. I believe that after a while,
we owe it to ourselves to create our own destiny. That requires
introspection and brutal honesty with ourselves and beating the lazy,
complacent and dishonest parts of ourselves into a bloody pulp.
Well, mobsters are not very good at being honest with themselves. So,
they rob themselves of their ability to change course and overcome the
hand that was dealt them. So, mobsters are doomed by their childhood
and in particular by their relationships with their mothers. Because
of their penchant for lying to themselves, they are not capable of the
level of introspection which is capable of changing their lives. For
instance, the first corrective action they may take is to get out of
the mob life altogether. So because mobsters rob themselves of the
ability to change themselves from within, Tony is doomed to always be
attracted to needy negative women, and Ralphie's evil stems largely from
his mother's treatment of him as well.
One last thing about women is what Adriana said to Ralphie. She says
that one can tell everything about a man from how he treats women. I
think that's true as far as character is concerned. Men are able to
bully women because of social status, although the difference in social
status is decreasing to near nothing (as it should). In addition,
men are able to bully women because of physical strength. So, how
a man acts from a position of strength is unvarnished by need to
compromise, and therefore one can tell a lot about a man just by how
he treats women.
This episode covered a lot of ground! What about that "shot-across-the
bow" by Carmela! She left that nail for Tony so that he could not ask
about the money she took. :-)
thanks
Jae
