I just bought an 8500 after a lot of research. It seems that the price difference is so small between the 8500 and the Bel, that you might as well go for the 8500. It has more features and all of the tests i've read rated it slightly higher on range.
I bought my 8500 new on e-bay for $264 shipped. Even after buying the direct-wire cord, visor clip, and extended 2 extra year warranty (which covers the software upgrades for free), i'm still paying less than retail.
I dont know if the 980 can be upgraded with software, and i dont know if the 980 can display multiple radar sources like the 8500 can. I dont know why anyone would buy the V1 over the 8500 since the V1 hasn't been getting the greatest reviews lately. It's not very configurable either. Also, I think the directional arrows are kind of a gimmick since radar bounces around so much, it's difficult to tell where it's originating from. Reviews said they were unreliable usually. I love my 8500! Get one, you cant beat the price on ebay.
