I probably don't have to add all of that at the end of a post, but it's a CYA sort of thing. The problem is twofold. First, each state requires lawyers to be licensed in order to practice in their jurisdiction. If the person asking the question is in a state in which I'm not licensed, I can be prosecuted for the unauthorized practice of law. They tend to be harsher toward other lawyers offering legal advice "extra-jurisictionally" (I think I just invented a word) than non-lawyers offering a lay opinion. Second, if someone were to take my comments on a message board as legal advice and then have a bad outcome, I could be sued for legal malpractice (after all, I offered comments without even reading over the contract or checking on the legal definition of "material breach" in the original poster's jurisdiction).
It's probably overkill, but the couple of seconds it takes to add a little disclaimer at the bottom of a message board posting is well worth reducing the risk of either of the above circumstances.
