Your right about it costing $$$. However, it is hard to sell and get feedback on a secret. Even a slip to the press that something is being developed would keep hopes up.

BMW did let slip out a lot of information about the new M3. Too much in fact since they ticked off a lot of people when they kept moving the release date back and the price higher. The wait list was two years old and they had presold every production unit for the entire first two years prior to even releasing the official announcement and final specs.
Audi did similar when they released the S4 Avant. Presold every first year production unit prior to the official announcement. The wait list was over a year at my local dealership with spec's/options unknown.

Granted that most of these people put money down on blind faith (and manufacturer promises) the car would be something great, but none the less, both BMW and Audi confirmed they would produce these cars and only released partial information. They followed up by releasing even more information as they firmed up the specs. Go onto the BMW board and look at the archives. There was so much confirmed information, even down to colors/options and when they were testing and where they were testing the M3 in the US. BMW even confirmed they were testing a hydrolic manual and allowed spy shots. They were also quick to put down incorrect information. People don't put deposits down for non-existant future cars to often...... These cars didn't just show up, they were generating enthusiasm several months before the pretty brochures were sent to the print shop.

My rant,
