As a General Contractor for Residential and Commercial projects, I have these thoughts: if you hired the "supervisor" directly... YES. If you hired a General Contractor... NO.
Remember, you hired your Contractor because either he had a good rep or you liked him (or his price) better than any other bidder. Regardless of the "supervisor's" trade, he is there because your General Contractor employs him and has the good sense to let him do his job without undo interference. Out of a sense of Pride, the tradesman wants to do a good job for you, but more importantly also for the General because the General writes his check from week to week. If you're not satisfied with the quality and progress of the project, it's not the tradesman that gets bawled out, it's the Contractor. When the job is going well, the Contractor is praising and stroking the ego of the tradesman whether or not the client is praising the efforts of the Contractor. The Contractor knows his reputation depends on the ability of his sub's, and works hard to recruit and hold onto the best men he can find. That is not always easy. Do not believe "that the owner doesn't do the work himself." A General Contractor's work is not necessarily swinging a hammer or finishing sheetrock; its making sure the client is 100% satisfied and has received full value for the money spent.
DO thank the trademan for a job well done; he will appreciate it. But don't forget to thank your Contractor for a job well done because it is he who coordinated the varying trades, negotiated the best prices on your behalf, and managed the project to a successful completion.
Just my prejudiced $ .02 worth.
