We all know GM is a dinosaur and they make mediocre crap few of us want to buy but the Suburban isn't one of them. If you actually need something big like a Suburban (because of a huge family, perhaps), then the mileage numbers don't look so bad.
A Suburban gets 15 mpg combined and it can carry eight people so a 450 mile trip will use 30 US gallons, or 3.75 gallons/passenger. Compare that to my '01 Saab 9-3 SE, which gets around 25 mpg combined and seats five. I'd use 18 gallons on that 450 mile trip, or 3.6 gallons/passenger. Only 4% better than the GM tank.
Huge vehicles have a place for some people/families just like Saabs. Personally, I'd never get a Suburban -- I'd sell three of the kids first -- but I don't dump on people just because they own one if they use its full capacity.
