my neighbor has a brand new BMW 330 which replaced a 1990 SPG, and while he told me that the old rwd problems of fishtailing down the road are gone, he still couldnt get the car up his inclined driveway. the traction control can limit wheel spin, and if one wheel is on slippery stuff and the other is on dry the car wont do funny things, but the rear wheels still dont have the traction to push the car forward up hill on the snow. I gave him a push and he parked it in a parking lot down the street... the spg with none of the technology always got up that driveway with no problem...
I spent my first two years driving in new england in a 1974 Volvo 164 (grandpa's old car) which I feel gave me good winter driving skills, but switching to a FWD saab was a revelation. So much more predictable, so much less to worry about.
AWD is probably a good thing, but I still think it gives most drivers a false sense of confidence, particuarly in slippery conditions. Those TV advertisement of BMW xi and volvo barrelling along on snow gives all the idiot drivers an idea that such driving is safe with AWD, which im sure is a crock.
