It comes down to this: the goal of designing a product is to make it stand out from the crowd, so consumers will pick *it* instead of another product. This is a way to increase market share, build brand, etc. This is common sense, right?
Well, it seems GM would want Saab to stand apart from the crowd while still meeting or exceeding most/all industry benchmarks for performance, reliability, safety, and so on. GM has helped in the area of reliability (it seems), cost cutting, and faster design and production, to name a few.
BUT, it seems like most of the other steps they have taken are making Saab more and more like every other car out there. Nowadays, everyone expects cars to be reliable and safe, but with the direction that Saab is heading, what is it that makes Saab stand apart? With the 1989 900, I could list a plethora of reasons; with my 1995 9000, I can list a lot, but not as many. Looking at the 9-3SS, that list seems to be shrinking.
Past behavior is the best predictor for future behavior, as the saying goes. Judging by the past behavior of GM as they interact with Saab, I'm not sure I like where this is going.
My two cents…
